May 19, NTT DoCoMo announced a new line of mobile phones for the summer selling season. These include an Android phone with Google's mobile OS and a collaboration based on the popular animation movie franchise Evangelion. In total 18 models will be released with a rich array of features.
Attracting the most attention is the first Google phone "HT-03A". It is 113mm in width by 56mm high x and 14mm thick and weighs in at 123 grams. The LCD screen is 3.2 inches. Google services such as google maps (including streetview), Gmail, and YouTube are easy to use. With a built-in magnetic sensor, when users use street view, they can scroll the image to match the orientation of the handset. In addition to the LCD touch screen, there is a small trackball at the bottom of the terminal. There is a camera on the back of the body.
Features such as wireless LAN, GPS support, 3G and GSM will be available for global roaming users, however, it is not planned that i-mode mail and the i-mode sites will be supported abroad. Release is scheduled in 6-7 months, and based on a discount purchase of the handset with a two-year contract will be available for around 25,000 yen.
Other models feature larger display sizes, the greater implementation of touch screens as well as longer lasting batteries. GPS feature improvements mean that GPS functions will be available to users travelling outside of Japan. Also the i-mode browser has been greatly enhanced and RSS registration is now set up to support pages up to 500KB in size as well as being able to handle and resize embedded flash video.
A collaboration with the Evangelion franchise will also see the release of a new model based on the SH-06A, the screen includes Evangelion animations and there are sounds fx for the phone based on the series as well. These phones will be released in a limited offering of 30,000 handsets and will go on sale in Japan in June - July. The price is yet to be released.
