January Issue

Greetings from the team at Denphone.

It has been some time since the last Denphone Digest, and we plan to return to a regular schedule once again. The newsletter's focus historically, has been VoIP technologies, but there are so many interesting things happening in both wireless and networking that we will also be including articles and featured products in those areas too.

Recently, Abenomics has been doing its work and the Japanese economy is in the middle of an upturn. Hopefully this will continue and we can look forward to a rather brighter future than we seen over the past few years. The Tokyo Olympic Games should also be a great economic spring board for next 6 years.

We have a new staff member in charge of the Digest, Mr. Hiroyuki Mizuno. In this issue, he will introducing a new wireless headset and examining some interesting developments in the open source WiFi router market.

A belated Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu and all the best for 2014.

Happy New Year to all our valued customers and suppliers!

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Hiroyuki Mizuno, and I recently joined Denphone as a Sales Engineer. I’m thrilled to be part of the Denphone team, many of whom I have known and worked with for many years.

Previously I worked as a System Engineer in a small international company for over 10 years, installing and supporting their IP and VoIP infrastructure. I hope to utilize the experience I gained there to provide the quality of service that you are used to receiving at Denphone.

I look forward to being of service to you in the future and thank you in advance for your support and encouragement.

Old and New

This may bear a passing resemblance to Optimus Prime, but sadly it is not related to any of the Transformers!

In 2003, Linksys released a WiFi router with the product code WRT54G. However, for various reasons, the source code they wrote for the router violated the GPL and they were forced to release the code into the public domain. That code became the base for the open source Open-Wrt project in January 2004. OpenWrt and later, the forked DD-WRT became hugely successful, ironically making WRT54G the most widely sold WiFi router in the world at that time. The software has since been modified and ported to also run on a wide range of other WiFi routers.

Cisco acquired Linksys in 2003, but was not so accommodating towards the open source concept and did not work actively with the community to support OpenWrt or DD-WRT. However Linksys was sold to Belkin in 2013, who have recently announced a quite different approach. Belkin/Linksys have announced that a new router, the WRT1900AC will actively support open source firmware, including presumably OpenWrt and DD-WRT. The router is equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz ARM processor, 128MB of flash memory, and 256MB of DDR3 RAM, 4 Port GB Ethernet switch, GB Ethernet WAN, Four antenna, one USB 3.0 port and one eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port. It will support IEEE802.11ac. So it seems to be a well equipped unit. Linksys is offering test units, SDKs and APIs to the third-party firmware communities. By the time the WRT-1900ac is finally released in the market this spring, there will be plenty of third-party firmware and add-ons available. Linksys intends to price the WRT1900AC at $300 US dollars. It is not known if they will release a Japanese model or not. We certainly hope that they do!
